A very instructive shot on the differences between the Murcielago and the Gallardo.

The Murcielago, on the right, is evidently a stylistic evolution of the Countach, while the Gallardo is more clearly designed from a blank CAD screen, some general ideas on what Lamborghinis should look like, and perhaps a vague concept of the Toyota MR2 Spyder rear end.

Advantages of Gallardo: Smaller, simpler, less expensive, not much slower than a Murcielago, still faster than a Countach.
Advantages of Murcielago: Countach lineage, faster than Gallardo, actually has some luggage space.

Advantage of Countach: Nothing else will ever be a Countach.

Is the Gallardo really faster (higher top speed) than the Murciélago, or just quicker (better acceleration)?

Gallardo
Top Speed mph (km/h): 196 (315)
Acceleration 0-62 mph s: 4.0

Murcielago
Top Speed mph (km/h): > 205 (> 330)
Acceleration 0-62 mph s: 3.8

I got this from RSC.com and I guess the Murcielago is faster! I saw a Top gear review where they had compared. But I guess I was wrong :(

Somehow I thought so. I doubt Lamborghini would allow their "entry-level" car to be faster than their premium car.

The Murcielago weighs more than two tons, though. A bit too heavy, IMO.
